Third Call to Action: December 21, 2011

Happy Holidays everyone!

I am writing again to seek your help as we continue to fight to bring Eslam and Zainab home. No government official has, as of yet, responded to our petition that has now been signed by more than 6,000 people worldwide. The State Department has recently posted a blog congratulating Tunisia on its progressive steps toward democracy.

Please join me in calling on President Obama and Secretary Clinton to utilize every diplomatic and legal means to compel the newly elected Tunisian President and Cabinet to ensure the safe and speedy return of Eslam and Zainab to America. While it would be great to seek the return of Faical to face the U.S. justice system, it is not my deepest concern. Additionally, please help make an impact by contacting officials in the Tunisian Department of Justice and with their Prime Minister.

There are a few requests below. As before, I’m asking that you please act and then share this message with everyone you know.

Finally, I owe a great debt of gratitude to all of you who read this. But I especially want to be sure to let you all know how truly wonderful the core group of angels from the various agencies I’m working with have been. From my case worker at the State Department, to the staff at the American Embassy in Tunisia, to the Virginia State Police, FBI and Missing and Exploited Children, I have had nothing but their best attention and intentions. God indeed blessed me with an amazing team. I am firm that, with your help and theirs, Eslam and Zainab will be home soon!

Thank you all, from the bottom of my heart!

-Edeanna

1. PLEASE copy and paste the following both as a comment to the State Department’s Blog and as a comment to the State Department’s post on Facebook. Be sure to include the links to all of the media sources as well:

Secretary Clinton and President Obama,

While the United States congratulates Tunisia on its steps toward democratization, I demand that you publicly declare your deep and sincere concern for the return of the two kidnapped American children, Eslam and Zainab Chebbi (Dept. of State case: OCS 2011 319 2852) who were taken illegally from the United States to Tunisia by Faical Chebbi on November 11, 2011.

Having full legal and physical custody by mutual consent, the mother, Édeanna Johnson-Chebbi had registered all legal custody documents and orders regarding the children with the Tunisian Embassy in Washington, DC.  She was given direct assurances from the embassy that the children could not be issued Tunisian passports given the documentation provided.   Despite this, Faical was able to obtain Tunisian birth certificates and passports in both children’s names, without the knowledge or consent of their mother – their sole legal guardian.

To date, the Tunisian embassy refuses to admit any wrongdoing.  Two American children were taken from American soil at the aid of a foreign embassy on our land.  I demand your full attention,  and the use of every diplomatic and legal means at your command, to ensure that the new leadership of Tunisia, from the President down, work within their full capacities to see that Eslam and Zainab return to their mother in the United States this holiday season.

Sincerely,

Dear Members of the Tunisian Justice community,

I am writing on behalf of Edeanna Chebbi, in regards to her two children, Eslam Chebbi (5) and Zainab Chebbi (2).  On November 11, 2011, Faical Chebbi, a Tunisian and American citizen, illegally abducted the two children from the United States.  On January 5, 2011 Faical granted Edeanna full legal and physical custody of Eslam and Zainab in the United States.  Faical and Edeanna were legally divorced in the United States on October 26, 2011, without contest.

Faical grew weary of failed attempts to survive in the U.S. and, in a last attempt to harm his now ex-wife, he abducted their two small children, and returned to Tunisia. Edeanna has been fighting for the return of Eslam and Zainab to the United States since she became aware of the abduction.  Presently there are both State and Federal warrants issued in the U.S. both for the return of the children and for the arrest of Faical Chebbi.

Edeanna is attempting to comply with Tunisian law in obtaining the safe and speedy return of the children to their home in America. I am writing to ask for your assistance in ensuring that the rights of Eslam and Zainab are preserved and that justice prevails in the new Tunisian system.

I ask that you contact the American Embassy in Tunisia to inquire further about this case and utilize your full means to help return Eslam and Zainab to their home, their family and friends, and their mother, Edeanna Chebbi.

With appreciation,

Dear Prime Minister Hamadi Jebali,

I am writing in request that you share my concerns below with newly elected President Moncef Marzouki.

On November 11, 2011, Faical Chebbi, a Tunisian citizen by birth, and American citizen by naturalization, illegally abducted Eslam Chebbi and Zainab Chebbi from the United States to Tunisia.

Faical grew weary of failed attempts to survive in the U.S. and, in a last attempt to harm his now ex-wife, Edeanna Chebbi, he abducted their two small children, and returned to Tunisia.

Having full legal and physical custody by mutual consent, Edeanna Chebbi had registered all legal custody documents and orders regarding the children with the Tunisian Embassy in Washington, DC in June of 2011. She was given direct assurances from the embassy that the children could not be issued Tunisian passports given this documentation.

Despite this, the embassy issued Tunisian birth certificates and passports in both children’s names, and without knowledge or consent of their mother. This act contributed to the kidnapping of Eslam and Zainab.

There are now State and Federal warrants and court orders issued in the United States both for the return of Eslam and Zainab to their mother, and for the arrest of Faical Chebbi for the abduction of Eslam and Zainab. Full information regarding this case may be obtained from the American Embassy in Tunisia.  Furthermore, the Tunisian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Tunisian Ambassador in the U.S. have all been provided all relevant information regarding this case.

I am asking that you convey my concerns with President Marzouki that he give his full attention to this case, and show the international community that Tunisia is fully vested in engaging fairly and humanely as it re-establishes itself in the global community.

Eslam and Zainab deserve to be with their rightful custodial parent, Faical kidnapped these children from their mother, their home, and their family and friends to hide under the laws of a former Tunisia that he felt would protect him.

I urge you to show the world community that Tunisia will not support criminal behavior and harbor international criminals, and show Eslam and Zainab that they too have rights, by returning them home to the United States where they belong.

Sincerely,
